How to eat healthy when your family won’t

More and more, I hear that women want to eat food that suits them; They are tired of sitting at the dinner table. They know that proper nutrition supports their digestion, mood, energy and mental clarity.

Other family members they eat with often have different needs and tastes. A big meal can influence what’s on the menu, but the fast options are fatty, overly salty and sugary.

Many women still deal with mid-range hormones and autoimmune issues. Packaged foods are part of the problem because they block detox pathways. Hormones that need clearing circulate in the body and contribute to symptoms.

Women just want to eat what suits them and keep the family happy and they don’t have all night. There is no time for drama, arguments or short cooking. Preparing meals can be tiring on the go.

The worst thing is that the kitchen has become a lonely and functional place.

Conscious food preparation is sacred, grounding, and healing.

Traditionally, women gathered around the hearth, where many hands did light work. Here we laughed and cried together, supported and learned from each other.

Women’s meditations included cutting, salting and boiling in society. This rhythm produces oxytocin. And it helps women to maintain a successful nervous system throughout the household.

In bringing our gifts to the outside world, women have lost the Fire. For many, the kitchen is a place of destruction, not a place where we feel to be seen, heard and appreciated.

However, daily life still takes place here. Women can be decisive and successful and still claim divine femininity at home.

My health journey started with fatigue, chronic fatigue, brain fog and food sensitivities. The food list my doctor gave me was… Well, it was short.

The first morning, having lunch, there was nothing on my list in the fridge. I was standing in the middle of the kitchen crying.

Getting my health back was a top priority, but I didn’t settle for the hit I took at home. The taste of the food won out for my then husband. It wasn’t entirely his fault. Big food has entered our home and affected our mood.

Foods that worked for me caused arguments at the dinner table. When I gave up and went back to old habits, I was tired, cranky, and my symptoms flared up.

Trying to keep the peace, I set aside two dinners each night. But time hit my career. I didn’t know it at the time, but swallowing my stress was part of my gut’s struggle.

I felt like I was being treated like an employee and I resented it. The loneliness I felt in the kitchen silently seeped into the rest of our marriage.

After the divorce, I realized that loneliness in the kitchen affects single women. Sometimes it took too much energy to cook a nutritious meal for myself. So I ate a sandwich in front of the TV.

Are you standing in the kitchen at the end of the day feeling too tired to be creative? Cooking when you’re tired is like grocery shopping when you’re hungry.

My experiments in the kitchen gave good results. I learned that food can be healthy, tasty and efficient. Dinner time is once again sacred and I have stopped throwing myself at food.

Now being in the kitchen calms my nervous system and cooking re-nourishes my soul. It is part of the tapestry of my life. The quality of my culinary experience is as important to me as good food.

How can you change the family dynamic?

Big Food spends millions of dollars to produce very tasty products. Your taste buds and microbiome quickly adapt to overeating and undernutrition. The more people eat of it, the more they want it, and the less they want nutritious food.

But there is another side that you can use to your advantage. Your microbiome also quickly adapts to positive changes. When you start eating more vegetables and whole foods, you’ll feel better and faster. And your body wants more of the good stuff. The same goes for your family.

Below are some tips to slowly change your family dinnertime dynamic. Remember, this is a process that is most successful when they are on board and there is no pressure.

  • Don’t suffer in silence. Make sure your family members know that foods that don’t work for you have real consequences. Be very clear about how they affect you and what your symptoms are. Let them know that you no longer want to deny your body’s needs and ask them directly for their support.
  • Sometimes, you can compromise on foods like pizza night, but adjust your proportions. Add something like a salad or a side to make you feel nourished. Invite others to take a few bites of healthy food without waiting.
  • New interests often require 10-12 tries before you know if you like them or not. With children, especially, offer small amounts regularly.
  • You can support the change with things like quality probiotics or green supplements. It is important to eat whole foods regularly. Remember that you cannot supplement your way to good health.
  • If there is a strong resistance to certain foods, do not stress. You never know what can happen. For example, vegetables can be difficult to digest. Especially if they are wrong for your Ayurvedic type. Instead, allow your loved ones to prepare (or help you do) the things you need. You can still eat together even if you don’t have the same thing.
