MONDAY, April 13, 2026 (NewsDay News) – Around 12,000 people in the UK who received the first dose of the MenB vaccine will be offered a second shot next week after a deadly meningitis outbreak linked to the University of Kent.
The disease has reportedly caused two deaths and 19 confirmed cases in a short period of time NHS Kent.
A 21-year-old university student and a high school student both died after contracting the virus. BBC reported.
Health officials described the situation as “unprecedented” because so many people fell ill so quickly.
The vaccination campaign targets people who are likely to be exposed, including:

People who visited the night club associated with the outbreak

Some additional school and college students
Clinics are open in Canterbury, Faversham and Ashford and eligible people can book appointments online. BBC reported.
MenB vaccine requires two doses for full protection.
The second shot is given at least four weeks after the first, although it can be given later.
The vaccine protects against most types of meningococcal B bacteria in the UK. BBC said
The outbreak sparked a national response, with the UK’s Health Security Agency stepping in to support efforts such as giving antibiotics.
Authorities are also considering whether to offer the MenB vaccine to more teenagers in the future.
