Shane Moseley Jr (22-5-0) has gone through a tough fight camp as he prepares to fight Serhi “El Flaco” Bohachuk (27-3-0) for Zuffa Boxing on Sunday, May 10. But this is nothing new for this multi-generational fighter. As the buzzer approaches, Mosely sat down with M&F to explain his love for lifting heavy weights and why you should never count him out.
“It’s definitely a new chapter for me,” explains Moseley Jr., who lost his last fight to Jesus Ramos for the WBC middleweight title. Despite his disappointing unanimous decision loss, the son of International Boxing Hall of Famer Shane Moseley Sr. was given a lifeline in February when he signed with Zuffa Boxing. “It’s definitely energized me and I feel like I have a chance to be the first Zuffa champion,” he told M&F.
How Shane Mosley Jr. Trains for Boxing Power and Stamina
Of course, energy has rarely been an issue for Moseley Jr., and that’s a result of his intense training style. Fighter Strength and Conditioning Coach, Quincy Hatcherputs him through the ringer with full-body exercises, including spin and strike simulation while holding the bar plates. “They suck, especially with 45 plates,” jokes Moseley Jr., who finds that such moves are a surefire way to build muscle endurance and oxygen retention.
Mosely Jr.’s classes cover a variety of subjects, including agility exercises to relieve stiffness and working in jetpacks, but it is his love of lifting that drives both body and mind. “It’s something I’ve worked on more in my later years,” explains the 35-year-old, who can shift serious weight in his deadlift. “There’s something about weightlifting that drives you, man,” reflects the boxer. “It makes you feel good about yourself and makes you feel strong.”
What makes Sergey Bokhachuk a dangerous opponent?
With a victory over Rajab ButaevBohachuk comes into this fight hot, but young Mosel wanted to learn from his mistakes and come back even stronger. He should never be counted out. “I’ve definitely made some adjustments,” he says M&F. “To stay focused, work on my game plan and just stay strong.”
Bohachuk is predicted to be the favorite to win in Sin City, but looking at Mosely’s past could be a huge mistake. “I mean, for them to look past me like I’m a serious dude, it’s wrong,” Moseley Jr. says. “I mean, if that’s the way he is, then good for him, but for me, I’m going to stand up to the task at hand and win.”
But that doesn’t mean Moseley Jr. hasn’t considered his future. “I definitely feel it’s a big win to beat someone like Sergej Bolcek. But it’s definitely not the same as stepping on him, but I want Callum Walsh to be next.”
