Chefs share the best steakhouse chains serving high-quality sushi and steaks.
In the mood for steak and sushi? No problem. You can have the ultimate combination of dry-aged steaks and world-class sushi without having to run to different places to get what you want. Many places offer the best of both worlds – dry-aged steaks with fresh, expertly prepared sushi. To find the chains that serve great steak and sushi, Dennis Little, chef and culinary expert Ask Chef Dennisshares his top three picks.
What makes a great sushi restaurant

An exceptional steakhouse that also serves sushi must balance two very different culinary disciplines without compromise. Steaks must be high-quality cuts, properly aged, and cooked using precise methods that emphasize flavor and texture. At the same time, sushi offerings should emphasize freshness, clean knife work, and properly cooked rice. “The best places respect both crafts equally,” says Chef Dennis. “You should be able to order a perfectly done steak and then turn around and eat sushi that feels like it’s thoughtful and well-executed.”
Benina

You know Benina as a place that turns dinner into an interactive theater show – chefs cook steak and fried rice in front of you while performing certain tricks that will delight diners. It’s a fun dining experience, and according to Chef Dennis, it’s also a great sushi chain. “Benihana’s spicy, jewel-toned rice brings bold flavor and satisfying texture to the table,” he says. “The brown rice base adds a golden brown that pairs beautifully with the spicy tuna topping, creating a contrast that keeps every bite interesting.” He adds, “It’s a shared appetizer that feels modern, delicious, and perfect for a hibachi dinner.”
Mastro’s Steakhouse

For USDA Prime grade beef Mastro’s Steakhouse is a great chain that never disappoints. The beef with its rib steaks, often aged for around 28 days, is known to be cooked in a broiler at 1500 to maintain its tender and juicy interior. But the sushi is just as impressive, says Chef Dennis. “Large Garlic Tuna Sashimi is naturally rich and fatty, making it ideal for sashimi-style dishes,” says Chef Dennis. “It’s the perfect balance of crisp, fresh tuna with a crisp, aromatic, umami flavor.”
Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse

Del Frisco’s Double Eagle Steakhouse is a classic and polished steakhouse experience with a strong connection and focus on premium cuts. Although it’s refined, it’s not overly formal, and it’s another steakhouse that serves delicious sushi. King crab Rainbow roll– Chef Denis’s favorite. “Sweet king crab provides a sumptuous base, while an assortment of fresh fish on top adds both color and subtle flavor,” he says. “Balanced, elegant and beautifully presented, this is a sushi roll that feels right at home on an upscale steakhouse menu.”
