THURSDAY, June 4, 2026 (NewsDay News) — Glucagon-peptide-1-receptor agonist (GLP-1 RA) is associated with a reduced incidence of breast cancer, according to a study published online June 2, 2026. JCO Oncology Practice which coincides with the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, which was held in Chicago from May 29 to June 2.
Elizabeth S. McDonald, MD, Ph.D., of the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, and colleagues examined the effect of GLP-1 on the risk of breast cancer in a retrospective cohort study involving 111,646 women aged 45 years and under (45 years). ≥25 kg/m2 and documentation image result. The researchers found that the incidence of breast cancer was lower in association with GLP-1 RA exposure (odds ratio, 0.649). GLP-1 RA exposure was associated with reduced breast cancer incidence in a matched logistic regression with 30,528 observations (600 cancer cases; odds ratio, 0.695).
“Although our study was observational and does not definitively confirm the relationship between GLP-1 drugs and a reduction in breast cancer, it adds to the growing body of evidence that it is worth investigating these weight loss drugs as a potential cancer prevention tool,” Macdonald said in a statement.
