Ryan “The Bruiser” Rozicki is set for his first fight outside of Canada when he takes on former WBO Cruiserweight Champion Chris Billam-Smith in the main event Zuffa boxing 07 in Bournemouth, England. But despite The Bruiser’s reputation as an old-school scrapper, he mixes rugged training with smart boxing strategy designed to get things done early. M&F.
Who is Ryan ‘The Bruiser’ Rozicki?
Rozicki’s origin story is as cinematic as they come. His first experience of the old-fashioned drill came on the remote island of Cape Breton, off the coast of Nova Scotia, where he was hauling firewood for his grandfather after the school bell rang. “My grandpa always said my boxing ability was because of all the wood he used to throw at me at the trailers,” he said. “Some days were tough, I’m not going to lie. But I’m glad he got me through it.”
While the intense manual labor was exhausting, it was also a distraction from a life that was increasingly headed in the wrong direction. Rosicky has been fighting since the age of seven, and as he grew older, the age gap with his opponents grew. Of course, Bruiser can only joke that this kind of scandal was never his fault. “It’s always been them, every time,” he says M&F with a funny smile. “There are some very tough people where I come from and I’ve run into a few of them. I certainly haven’t beaten them all, but yeah, I knew that I knockout power since I was twelve years old. I think (it was) the first time I knocked out someone who was a grown man in his 20s.”
Ryan Rozicki’s Journey From Schoolboy To Boxing Champion
Fortunately, Rozicki took his raw potential to the boxing gym, but learning technique was a wake-up call. “The trainer at the gym took me down quickly,” he said. “I was quickly put down by aspiring fighters, and I learned very quickly that tough guys only get hurt. They’re easy pickings, but it made me respect the sport and respect the exercise.”
Through boxing, Rozicki was able to channel his energy into something positive, becoming a student of history who looks up to Jack Dempsey as his favorite boxer of all time. Bruiser is still involved in some rough training methods, as pictured in March when he tried repeat an old George Foreman move; he pulled the truck with only his body. But this excursion ended badly when the truck went off the road and hit a ditch. “I might be selling this truck next week,” he told his Instagram followers after the incident. “Message me if anyone is interested. It’s in Cape Breton, most likely needs to be towed, but still a truck with a scary story.”
Ryan Rosicky’s strategy for beating Chris Billam-Smith in Zuffa 7
Despite the reputation of Rozicki’s story for old school educationhe does not lift weights in the gym while preparing for a fight. “We run, we sprint and we box,” says the boxer about the camp that brought him to this next boxing match. But while their records may be similar, Bruiser (21-1-1) will be tasked with a completely different opponent in Chris Billam-Smith (21-2-0). That’s because the man they call “The Gentleman” is an avid boxer himself, the kind of fighter who humbled him in his early years of training. Rozitsky feels that the longer the fight lasts, the more it will go in favor of the hero of his hometown, so he does not want to leave the result in the hands of the judges. “My goal here is to do everything and make it happen,” he said.
