In episode 289 threat podcast, Joined by Dennis James, Jose Raymond and Milos Sarchev, the host shared what he told the crowd when asked if he would change anything about his career.
Competing for three decadesDennis James became Mr. Universe in the 90s, winner of the Super Show Europa in the 2000s and a candidate for the Masters Mr. Olympia in 2012. The Menace has competed in an astounding ten Mr. Olympia events during his career, finishing in the top five and placing 20th. But despite his immense success in the muscle, James believes that paying more attention to the smaller details could bring him even more trophies.
Why Dennis James believes photography is more important than most athletes realize
During the show, James explained that he cares less about chasing down his opponents for size. “I was concentrating on painting,” he told his colleagues about how he could have been more successful. “If I could change, if I could turn back time, I would pose.”
Threat also reflected on adjustments he could make to his training to prioritize his routines. “The two hours of cardio that I did, I just did one hour and one hour of posing,” she said.
How posture can improve your bodybuilding results
James recalled that day, when he was training with Milos Sarchev, he didn’t want to practice his position after a lifting session, because he felt that his muscles were very thin. Now, The Menace says he’ll take his shirt off when he’s asked to give it time if he ever gets it back. “Melvin Anthony was one of them,” he recalled. “He couldn’t keep his shirt on long enough. But you could see that on stage he kept his back and it was always perfect.”
James says that now, when asked for advice, the legendary bodybuilder always tells contestants to work on their presentation. “Nobody’s going to ask you how many squats you’re doing or how many reps you’re doing when you walk on stage,” he said. “They want to see what you look like, and if you don’t practice the pose, how are you going to go on stage?”
Milosh Sarchev agreed and noted that posing is a way to develop control and reduce stomach size. “And for photography, the most important thing is to keep it moderate,” he said. “Anyway, that’s it.”
