Ex Indie Girls, this one’s for you. Gabriel Korn Long Island Girls opens in 2005: Susan drives a car full of friends to meet a group called ?? (pronounced Chi-Chi, naturally) when he’s asked to take in a teenage Eliza he barely knows but can’t look away from.
Their connection is instant and electric—but thanks to small-town gossip, it’s also short-lived. Years later, Susan swapped Long Island for Brooklyn and pursued the indie music career she had always dreamed of. Then Eliza appears again. Old feelings resurface – as do old problems.
Expect a quirky coming-of-age story of first love, friendship and finding yourself with plenty of 2000s nostalgia to boot. We asked the company some questions. Here’s what she had to say…
Q: If you were stranded on a desert island and could only eat one thing, what would it be?
Corn: Cheese pizza, especially from Lillian’s in Forest Hills, Queens. In fact, I would eat this for every meal forever – even if I wasn’t stranded on a desert island.
Q: What is your one unpopular opinion?
Corn: The correct amount of sleep is 10 hours.
Q: What’s one thing that made you 10% happier?
Corn: Growing herbs in my garden. Running out into the yard and chopping some cilantro is very satisfying. It makes me feel like I’ve really accomplished something.
Q: What’s the last thing you read that you can’t stop thinking about?
Corn: love me by Constance Debre. The story itself stuck with me – a French woman leaves her husband and career for freedom and lesbianism, losing custody of her son in the process – but what I really can’t help but use is the language.
He uses commas like me in this sentence, he writes very rarely but very clearly, he sends all the passages in one long sentence, the end result is terrible, I wish I could write like him, but instead I recommend this book to everyone I know.
Q: What is your favorite indulgence?
Corn: I’m an absolute sucker for all those YA TV shows – Summer I became beautiful, Lie to me, Off campus. And I don’t apologize for that.
Q: What’s one thing you can’t leave home without?
Corn: Sunny. Especially from Tower 28which is very gentle on my sensitive skin.
PS: Read our extensive author interview to find out why Korn never leaves the house.
