Listeria pregnant women, adults 65 and older, infants, and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk. During pregnancy, infection can lead to miscarriage, stillbirth, premature birth, or death in the newborn.
Mild cases can cause fever, muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhea. More serious infections can cause headaches, stiff neck, confusion, loss of balance and seizures, the FDA said. Symptoms usually appear within two weeks of eating contaminated food, but can begin the same day or last up to 10 weeks.
