The United States national soccer team broke a 96-year streak at the World Cup on June 19 after defeating Australia for its first consecutive victory in the tournament since 1930.
What a win over Australia means for Team USA
A historic performance against Australia at Seattle Stadium saw Team USA win 2-0 against Australia after a 4-1 defeat by Paraguay. And this victory was more than a victory, as the result marked for the first time since the start of the World Cup in 1930the team won consecutive victories. A double win puts the host nation on top of Group D and sends them into the finals regardless of their final group game against Turkey.
What’s next for the USMNT against Turkey?
As Team USA celebrates an impressive start to their 2026 World Cup campaign, they will be well aware that those back-to-back victories dating back to 1930, which saw them beat Belgium and Paraguay, were halted by a 6-1 loss to Argentina. Realizing the importance of the knockout stages, critics are advocating that the team can rest some of its busy players for their upcoming game against Turkey as they are guaranteed to progress – win, lose or draw.
It was Australian defender Cameron Burgess who got the USA off to a winning start on Friday with an eleventh-minute own goal, followed by Alex Freeman’s header into the back of the net. “What dreams are made of,” Freeman, who plays for Spain’s Villarreal, commented after the game. “It means so much more to do it all on home soil! Unreal performance from the boys.”
Team USA will look to build on their win against Turkey on Friday, June 26 in Los Angeles before entering the playoffs.
