STRIPED Dietary Supplement Label Explorer: A tool to identify supplements marketed with weight loss, muscle building and cleansing/detox claims
This study developed a new, publicly available tool using the Dietary Database Application Programming Interface (DSLD API) to classify nutritional supplement labels with weight loss, muscle building, and cleansing/detox claims. Systematic heuristics outperformed deep learning for certain classifications, but required more development effort. The tool allows for scalable monitoring of additional potentially misleading claims, research support and consumer protection.

A weight loss dietary intervention enhances the ability of hyperinsulinemia to reduce serum ghrelin concentrations in obese subjects.
This study found that obese subjects had impaired ghrelin secretion in response to insulin, which improved after a 12-week weight-loss dietary intervention. The innovation is that weight loss restores ghrelin regulation by insulin and provides improved appetite control mechanisms. These findings have important implications for the treatment of obesity by demonstrating a physiological pathway by which weight loss can increase satiety.

Daily dietary protein allocation does not influence changes in body composition during weight loss in overweight or obese women of reproductive age: a randomized controlled trial
This randomized controlled study showed that the distribution of protein (even compared to the curve between meals) did not significantly affect changes in body composition during weight loss in women, since all participants experienced such a decrease in body weight, fat mass and fat-free mass. The innovation lies in the direct testing of protein time patterns under controlled feeding conditions, showing no additional benefits of equal distribution. These findings suggest that total protein intake, rather than partitioning, may be more appropriate for body composition during weight loss.

Coffee alters diet-induced obesity and uterine function by impairing insulin and sex steroid actions in rats
This study showed that obesity induced by caffeinated diet impairs uterine function in rats by decreasing ovarian hormones and increasing oxidative stress, leading to changes in the expression of key molecular regulators. Innovation is in the association of diet-induced obesity with hormonal and oxidative changes that disrupt uterine physiology. These findings suggest potential mechanisms by which obesity may adversely affect women’s reproductive health.

Can probiotics affect adaptive thermogenesis induced by chronic energy restriction after a 12-week intervention in adult men living with obesity? Secondary analysis of a randomized clinical trial (São Paulo Clinical Trial on Obesity and Gut Microbiota)
This study showed that probiotic supplementation does not attenuate adaptive thermogenesis during chronic energy restriction in obese men, as both groups showed similar reductions in resting energy expenditure and body composition. Innovation in evaluating the role of probiotics in metabolic adaptation during weight loss using a randomized controlled design. These findings suggest the limited efficacy of probiotics in altering the adaptation of energy expenditure to the effects of weight loss strategies.

Effects of normal sleep duration on weight loss during a behavioral weight loss intervention in a Mediterranean population
This study found that long duration of normal sleep (> 8 hours) was associated with weight loss, a lower probability of achieving clinical weight loss, and a higher reduction in behavioral intervention. The innovation is in using a large and longitudinal cohort to clarify the role of sleep duration in weight loss outcomes. These findings suggest that sleep patterns, particularly prolonged sleep, may influence intervention success and should be considered in weight management strategies.

The role of meal timing in appetite responses to acute exercise in obese and non-obese adolescents: A systematic review and meta-analysis.
This review found consistent evidence that meal timing after intense exercise did not significantly affect energy intake, although effects differed by weight status, with some modulation seen in lean young adults. The authors concluded that post-exercise meal timing has a limited effect on appetite but may be phenotype specific. Future research should explore the mechanisms and individual variability with applications in developing nutritional exercise strategies to optimize appetite regulation.
