There is a saying, “If slaughterhouses had glass walls, we would all be vegetarians.” What happens in this article is behind those windowless walls. One of two things will happen by the end of this article. One, you get upset and try to change how and what you eat, or two, you put it aside and continue doing what you’ve been conditioned to do and live with the reality that you are definitely what you eat – a heartless, hard-hearted person.
All animals go to slaughterhouses. There they can hear, smell and hear death all around them. And while these animals struggle to survive, the workers show impatience with these poor animals to not slow down the “production”.
The government, in its compassion, requires that the animal be stunned before it is killed. How do they do it? By the method of the name, the lightning of the captive bolt. A gun is placed on the animal’s head, which shoots a metal rod into its brain. What if the animal struggles and the stick is lost? Easy. Repeat this over and over until it reaches the correct mark.
Then there is the electric shock. This electrocutes the animal, causing a great deal of sickness. But what if the charge is not high enough? Then the animal becomes paralyzed, but does not lose its sensitivity. Whatever it takes, right?
Next, there is a formal slaughter where the animal’s throat is cut when it is fully awake. The animal is believed to be unconscious within seconds. The fact is that due to the blood flow from the back of the neck, the animal can be unconscious and bleed for up to a minute, all the while screaming in pain.
There was an article in the Washington Post that after stunning pigs, they were dunked in boiling water to soften their skins for skinning. Due to the mental capacity of the staff, most pigs will burn and drown when alarmed and kick when put in water. The same goes for chickens, turkeys, ducks, and geese that are electrocuted. They are usually alert because they are boiling or drowning.
Many slaughterhouse workers remove their stones by punching the animals while they are still alive, or by tearing the eggs from the chicken’s body and then fighting with the eggs, or the heads of coral chickens with their feet stuck in the cages of transport vehicles. If the bird refuses the throat cutting machine, the worker just cuts off the head so as not to slow down the production.
Some of the worker’s other pastimes include throwing live chickens against the wall, picking the chickens up by their feet and banging their heads against the wall or floor, or throwing them on the floor while they are alive and jumping up and down.
The USDA, which oversees the treatment of animals and poultry in slaughterhouses, says “a sharp increase in production rates, a lack of inspector support at plants, new inspection policies that significantly reduce our enforcement authority, and little or no access to plant areas where animals are killed have hampered our ability to ensure humane compliance.”
The good news is that even when problems are reported to inspectors, the government ignores them. One example of this was when no action was taken against a Texas beef company for clipping the hooves and ears of live cattle.
It’s up to you to look into your heart and decide if you want to be a part of it or not.
Allah!
