There’s a reason we instinctively feel the urge to spring clean. This springtime push to clean and freshen up extends to more than just your home. It’s amazing to include your body too!
Even the most knowledgeable person can benefit from a liver cleanse at least once a year. I prefer three times a year. But spring is when I completely reset.
Why is spring the season of the liver?
Ayurveda knows that spring is a time of growth, but also a time of stagnant energy. Think about all that compost in your garden at the end of winter. Garden beds should be turned and aerated to support new growth. It’s the same with your body.
You can eat quality, organically grown food every day. But it is impossible to avoid pesticides, hormones, environmental pollutants and other chemical burdens. A healthy liver has the ability to filter all of this out, but it’s a big deal these days.
Your health will benefit from cleaning the “filter” and giving it some support. If you only have one protocol per year, I recommend a liver cleanse.
As we get older, problems like allergies and food sensitivities can develop. But it shouldn’t be like that.
Often, we think that allergies are caused by allergens. But under the reactions of the body, digestion is slow. This is solvable.
Your body’s enzymes and acid production are responsible for breaking down food. But it needs bile to neutralize the acid after it’s done its job. A taxed liver cannot produce enough bile, so the stomach shuts down the digestive fire.
Over time, food suffers and the lining of the intestine falls into a state of destruction. In this case, foods that are more difficult to digest are not broken down well. Undigested waste is stored.
This creates a paradoxical situation. You can feel both overfed and undernourished at the same time. Food is heavy, but nutrients are not metabolized well. Detox pathways are blocked, leaving your system both overloaded and depleted.
Waste circulates in the body, causing:
- Allergies and sensitivities
- Joint pain
- Rashes and skin rashes
- Hormonal disorders
- Extra weight around your middle
- Low energy or brain fog
Spring cleaning can make all the difference in restoring a healthy state.
Two Ayurvedic approaches: to feed or to reduce
There are two main approaches in Ayurveda. Which one you choose depends on where your body is.
- Do you feel cold, tired, fragile, sensitive nervous system or weak? In this case, food comes first.
- Do you feel sluggish, heavy, inflamed, congested and foggy? It can be a good time to declutter and detox.
If both patterns are present, start with food.
A liver that feels weak does not need an intense cleanse. In fact, powerful cleansing foods can be harsh and overwhelming.
The liver isn’t just for filtering out toxins. It also supports lubrication, mobility and flexibility throughout the body.
I recently found out that the shoulder injury was due to frozen shoulder.
Intuition pointed me towards the liver. When the liver is exhausted, the flow of bile decreases. The metabolism of fats suffers, so it does not circulate in the body. It affects muscles and tendons.
In the past, I would go straight to fasting and cleansing protocols. This time, a gentler approach is more effective.
Food support
The easiest place to start is with packaged foods. Stop eating what you know doesn’t agree with you. This may include wheat and milk for a while; not forever, but for now. However, they do not serve well in Kapha (spring) season.
Choose whole foods instead, and you’ll soon find yourself expanding your list of happy foods!
One of the key concepts in liver support is the use of foods that stimulate bile flow.
These include:
- Herbs and spices such as ginger, cinnamon, turmeric and parsley
- Green vegetables such as celery, squash, bitter greens, string beans, and asparagus
- Beets
- Fruit like apples and lemons
Eating plenty of these foods every day can gently stimulate and support the liver. If what you need is constant detoxification, these foods are your daily medicine.
Your wish can also be revealed. Do you crave fatty foods? Are you not satisfied with light meals? This indicates that your liver is not processing fat as well as it could.
The body requires fats because it does not absorb them. But eating more fats won’t solve the problem. The problem is not the fat itself; oil processing.
Cravings for sugars and simple carbohydrates can indicate poor absorption of nutrients. When you don’t get all the nutrients you need, you crave quick fuel. It could also be that your microbiome needs better nutrition.
Cravings are often linked to emotional eating of comfort foods as well. Emotions are always included in Ayurvedic cleansing!
Tablet as Intel
The quality of the plate gives important information. If the stool is very pale, this usually indicates a lack of bile. If the stool floats or leaves a greasy residue in the toilet, this indicates poor digestion of fat.
A healthy snack, no matter what you eat, should be dark brown.
If they’re just dark brown when you eat a lot of greens, that’s a sign to eat more of them. It may also suggest the need for herbal support.
When the liver is too hot or cold
When the liver is overloaded, you can feel physically, mentally, and emotionally overheated. Especially if it runs over hours!
When the liver becomes weak, you may feel constantly cold, tired, and lethargic.
These patterns affect the entire Gut-Heart-Mind-Spirit axis. They affect mood, energy and speed.
Your Liver and Mood
The liver also has emotional content. Anger and frustration are traditionally associated with it. But the angry side is passion! A healthy liver supports the flow of passion and forward movement.
Treatments for an overheated liver include raw foods, cooling exercises, and Gutsi Yoga.
When the liver is fatigued, decision fatigue often occurs. Brain fog and stress prevail.
You can support resolution fatigue by allowing yourself extra rest and creating external structure. Reduce the number of daily decisions. Keep it simple and create a rhythm. This reduces the cognitive load when calibrating your system. Yoga Gutsy can also help with worn out livers.
5-day brain reconstruction
The 5-Day Gut-Brain Spring Recovery supports both a tired and overburdened liver. So you can:
- Quit sugar cravings, have more energy and mental clarity
- Feel your best and have more energy for life
- Lose weight
- Reduce inflammation
- Get back into good habits and improve your digestion
Meal plans and recipes take the thought out of meal prep while supporting your liver. Although this is a five-day practice, you can continue it for several weeks.
It includes Gutsi yoga practices to support the emotions, nervous system and liver.
And, we do a great job of helping you find the program.
Each participant will receive a 15-minute 1:1 call to set up the program or take next steps after completion.
You can do it in the middle of a normal life, without running out of energy, feeling sick, hungry, or feeling overwhelmed.
Sign up for a 5-day gut-brain reset here.
Spring is calling for freshness, but it’s not one size fits all.
Some organs need construction first. Some need gentle detoxification. Some need both, skillfully combined.
You may have heard that your gut supports your overall health or causes disease. Liver function is an important part of the gut puzzle!
When you support it well, your entire digestive system has more synergy. Including digestion, detoxification, hormone balance and mental clarity.
The question is not that it cleans and supports the liver. It selects (or edits) a method to your current state.
