A surprising vegetable approach to insomnia

Lactucin, the hypnotic component of lettuce, is being tested in a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of lettuce seeds.

“At that time there is such a perception spent sleep is a waste of time,” but that is broad recognized that insufficient sleep is associated with many acute and chronic conditions and increases the risk of death and disease.

As I discuss in my video Natural Diet Treatment for Insomniaforcing people to sleep only six hours a week to change expression of more than 700 genes. The worst effect can be to be endothelial dysfunction. Endothelium is the thin layer of cells that lines the inside of blood vessels and is responsible for the proper relaxation and dilation of our blood vessels. Accidentally getting people to sleep for five hours instead of seven for about a week results in a significant disturbance in the work of the arteries due to the difference of two hours at night.

How bad is a week for only five hours a night? Lack of sleep is no joke. “The amount of impairment … is similar to what is seen in people who smoke or have diabetes or have coronary artery disease.” Not surprisingly, people who sleep less than seven hours a night have a 12% to 35% increased risk of premature death compared to those who get the full seven hours. However, a significant portion of the population – 28% of adults in the United States, for example – may regularly receive less than that. “Having enough long, restful sleep sessions every night are the indisputable stone of good health.” So what can we do about it?

Those with sleep apnea, a common consequence of obesity that interferes with sleep, benefit of using CPAP machines while losing weight in hopes of treating the underlying cause. But what if apnea is not your problem? What if you just have trouble falling asleep or staying asleep? In my book How not to dietThere is a section on sleep enhancement where I go over the four rules of sleep regulation and the four rules of sleep hygiene, as you can see below and at 2:04 in my video. What if you follow these instructions, however still can’t sleep Are there natural diet pills?

I have previously talked about using kiwi and cherries to fight insomnia. Are there vegetables can this help? Sativa lettuce It is a traditional plant is used to treat insomnia. What is this exotic leafy vegetable? Lettuce! Apparently, it is an extract of lettuce is used for their soothing and sleep-inducing properties since the Roman Empire. Salad really does have there is a hypnotic substance in it Lactucinwhich makes the salad taste a little bitter. But you won’t know if it really works until you put it to the test.

And he does work…in frogs. It also works in rodents. The sleep of both mice and rats is improved by romaine lettuce. Researchers is used romaine because it contains more lactucin than other lettuces.

But does it work in humans? A study was conducted about 10 years ago was published in which insomnia patients were randomized to receive lettuce seed oil, i.e., oil extracted from lettuce seeds. Within a week, nearly 70% of those in the safflower oil group said their insomnia was “very or very much better,” compared to just 20% in the placebo control group. Researchers have concluded that lettuce seed oil is a useful and safe sleep aid in elderly patients with sleep problems. They chose to study older adults because insomnia affects about 20% to 40% of older adults at least a few nights a month.

Do you think this is a lot? Sleep disorders can the plague about 8 out of 10 women during pregnancy. Of course, there are many different sleeping pills, but they can pose a risk to the fetus or the mother. For example, doctors often to appoint Ambien is for pregnant women who have trouble sleeping, but Ambien use is associated with a number of adverse pregnancy outcomes, such as low-birth-weight babies, premature births, and cesarean delivery. And the use of valium during pregnancy connected to birth defects, including limb defects. There must be a better way. How about trying a salad?

Lettuce seed oil study had a number of limitations. For example, it was single-blind, meaning the researchers knew who was on the lettuce supplements and who was on the placebo, which could have introduced some bias. But the researchers actually said, Give us a break. Big pharma spends billions of dollars on research. No one wants to fund a lettuce study.

However, the researchers eventually conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled study, but this time on whole foods, not just lettuce seed extract. But what does a placebo salad look like? How to hide who gets salad and who doesn’t? Well, a head of lettuce does not fit into a capsule, but the whole lettuce seed can In a double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial of lettuce for pregnancy-related insomnia, 100 pregnant women with insomnia accidental to take capsules containing a quarter teaspoon of ground lettuce seeds or a placebo for two weeks. Those eating lettuce saw an improvement in sleep quality compared to placebo, with no side effects reported.
