Brandon Curry reveals the proper kicking form to build a thicker, wider back

Brandon Curry has a reputation for showing off functional workouts that produce Olympia-winning results, so when the big man saw the latest comments about his narrow beating on social media, he was quick to set the record straight.

Curry says his eyebrows raised recently when he read negative comments on a video fellow bodybuilder Victor Martinez. Apparently, the “Dominican Dominator” was criticized for having his arms bent while performing tight fists. This prompted Curry, who was outraged by what he saw on social media, to post his own video explaining that straight arms should be avoided for maximum results.

“I understand a lot of people look at (Martinez) and say she’s doing it wrong. Well, I think she’s doing it right,” said the 2019 Olympic Champion.

Brandon Curry’s technique for increasing lat activation

In tight grip lat pulldown can be performed while sitting in a cable station to isolate the upper body and is an exercise designed to add thickness to the back. When you’re working with a wide grip, the lat pull will create a winged look as the lats grow, but if you’re looking to add mass to your mid-back, a narrow grip is for you.

Start with a bent elbow

Concerned that unqualified social media commentators were suggesting a straight start, Curry decided to make the move for himself. “One of the most effective ways, I think, is to start with your elbows bent,” the large man explained while resisting the urge to fire his elbows. Curry shrugged, but kept his arms folded slightly. “Let the lats stretch, then drop down,” he said. “But never let those arms fully extend. Just raise the shoulders and let the lat extend … now that’s a lat.”

Focus on Scapula rather than range of motion

Curry concluded that starting with a bent elbow removes some of the arm swing required at the top of the pull. Instead, he focused on raising and lowering his scapula. “Guns are more than that,” he told his 1 million Instagram followers. “You’re trying to train your back, not your arms. So let your back go through the range of motion and don’t worry about the range of motion of your arms. That’s a tip for you.”

On a nice note, Curry had one final word for the “experts” on social media. “Whenever you think someone is doing something wrong, you may not know the nuances of what they are really doing right.”
