Sandra J. Kiplagat, PhD, of the CDC in Atlanta, and colleagues describe reports of dengue cases to ArboNET, the national arbovirus surveillance system in the 50 US states and the District of Columbia.
The researchers found that between 2010 and 2023, an average of 828 cases of dengue were reported annually. A total of 3,798 incidents were reported in 2024, which is 359 percent more than the annual average for 2010-2023. In total, 97.2% of the 3,798 cases outside the two weeks before the trial were related. appearance of symptoms; 2.8% of it was obtained locally. During the months of July to September, the number of dengue patients reached its peak, which is 41.6% of the total annual number; the highest percentage of diseases (21.8%) was registered among people aged 50 to 59 years. “In 2024, a record number of primarily travel-associated dengue cases were reported among residents of the US and DC states, highlighting the urgent need for coordinated dengue prevention and response efforts in public health settings, clinical settings, and vector control programs,” the authors wrote.
