Below, Nordquist shares four great at-home exercises that can help you improve your grip strength.
Farmer work
“Farmers involve walking and holding a heavy weight in each hand. This exercise directly strengthens the muscles responsible for the grip, and also improves posture, core stability, and overall body strength,” says Nordqvist.
- Hold a dumbbell in each hand at your sides.
- Start walking forward, keeping your body still.
Carrying case
“Squats are similar, but only use the weight on one side of the body, which creates additional challenges for balance and core engagement,” Nordqvist said.
- Stand up straight and hold a dumbbell by your side.
- Stand straight for 30 seconds without letting your loaded shoulder drop.
- Repeat on the other side.
Dead man
“Dead hangs and modern pull-up bar hangs are also great options because they place the arm under constant tension,” Nordquist says.
- At home (for the entrance), hold the pull-up bar with an overhand grip, hands shoulder-width apart.
- Allow your body to naturally hang from the floor with arms outstretched.
- Hold for the prescribed number of sets/reps.
Time is right

- Lift your feet off the ground and hang your arms outstretched.
- Relax your shoulders and pull them away from your ears.
- While you keep your body still, activate your core.
