Kennedy Ryan on “The Count,” her perimenopause memoir, and keeping her peace



Think running into your ex at the grocery store is bad? Imagine being hired for the same career-defining film. This is horror at its heart Kennedy Ryan Account.

The novel follows award-winning screenwriter Verity Hill and composer Wright “Monk” Bellamy, who meet at a Georgia HBCU, fall head over heels, and then tragically break up. More than a decade later, they’re reuniting to work on a biopic about the legendary Harlem Renaissance jazz legend — and while Oscar’s voice is palpable, the chemistry between Verity and Monk is even harder to ignore.

To move forward, they both must come to terms with the past: Can Verity tell Monk the truth about their breakup? And can she forgive herself for what happened? Expect a subtle portrayal of mental health, plenty of historical background, and the romance of a second chance called “the ceremony.” We asked Ryan a few questions. Here’s what she had to say…

Ryan: Intense competition LOL.

Q: What is your favorite indulgence?

Ryan: Diet Coke.

Ryan: My peace – and I will protect it at all costs.
