A multivitamin a day: Research has shown that a daily pill slows down biological aging


An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but can a daily vitamin really help prevent biological aging? Chronological aging is inevitable – you can’t avoid birthdays, but you can avoid premature biological aging – especially if you want to enjoy healthy years ahead. So is there a magic potion that will help you achieve this? Well, according to recent research, the answer is yes.

Multivitamins: A Pill for Biological Aging?

As people live longer, the definition of aging changes, especially because when you don’t consider your age, what’s going on inside can be a whole different story.

Biological aging is based on epigenetic clocks that measure your age based on changes in your DNA, and these changes can lead to more disease and death..

“I think of biological aging as the loss of integrity and resilience of cells, tissues, and organs over time.” Daniel Belsky, associate professor of epidemiology at the Robert N. Butler explains at Columbia University.

“It happens to all of us. It’s the leading cause of almost all chronic disease and death.”

Now that multivitamins are becoming the most popular dietary supplement in the United States, the science about what they can do for our health remains mixed, especially since they have not yet been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration. However, recent research suggests that these drugs may be a magic pill for slowing down biological aging.

The study

Use of information from The Cocoa Multivitamin Supplement Outcomes Study (COSMOS)Researchers at Harvard and Mass General Brigham examined the effects of daily multivitamin intake (a Centrum Silver supplement) for two years according to five measures of biological aging, because these five measures are the most common methods of summarizing different ways of aging of people.

They did this by evaluating analyzed DNA methylation data from blood samples of 958 randomly selected healthy participants with a mean chronological age of 70 years.

Participants were randomized to receive daily cocoa extract and a multivitamin, daily cocoa extract and placebo, placebo and multivitamin, or placebo alone.

The magic pill?

According to findingspublished natural medicine, multivitamin for two years caused biological aging to slow down by about four months, and people who were biologically older than their actual age at the start of the trial benefited the most.

While they still don’t understand why the multivitamin worked the way it did, Sesso, who is also a preventive medicine specialist at Mass General and an epidemiologist at Harvard School of Medicine, hypothesized that because a daily multivitamin contains all the vitamins and minerals you need, as well as a few other bioactive compounds, it might be the reason for the effect.

Time to take one pill a day?

Despite the study’s surprising findings, Sesso says more work needs to be done to better understand the exact role multivitamins play in promoting longevity. He also adds that the results do not necessarily mean that the multivitamin will add four months to a person’s life.

“What this means is that your health trajectory moving forward should be beneficial” he said. “It’s hard to know what those four months really mean.”

Sesso admits that multivitamins are a low-risk, safe and cost-effective option, but he still stresses the importance of adopting healthy lifestyle habits.

“Concentration is very important eating a nutritious diettaking a Good dreamand staying physically and socially active. A multivitamin can be a positive addition to your daily routine, but it shouldn’t be seen as a substitute for these vital habits.”
