Meet Henry David Thoreau
Most people familiar with Thoreau recognize his famous book, Walden, or Life in the Woods. This reflects the values of increasing personal freedom by reducing consumption.
The first edition of 2,000 books took four years to sell. However, over the years it has become a bestseller. Writer John Updike summed up the significance of the book’s cultural paradox: “it risks being as revered and unread as the Bible.”
Thoreau is an inventor
Henry David Thoreau was more than a philosopher/writer. During the 18th and 19th Over the centuries, quills replaced pens and pencils as the primary writing instrument. Henry’s father owned Thoreau Pencils, a well-known pencil manufacturing company in Concord, Massachusetts.
The best quality pencils of the time were unreliable and messy. Conducting research on pencils in the Harvard University Library, Thoreau discovered a new recipe for mixing clay with graphite. He invented what he called a “contract” for mixing ingredients.
The result was called Pen #2, which is the most widely used pen today.

Upon his father’s death, Henry became CEO of Thoreau Pencils. He transformed the company from a manufacturer to a producer and distributor of pencil raw materials. Raw materials for a new type of printing, called electrotyping, became very important.

Henry and his brother founded a private school called Concord Academy. Unlike other schools of the time, teachers were not allowed to physically hit disobedient students. Given Thoreau’s passion for nature, time in the classroom was interspersed with time spent exploring nature outdoors.
The school was successful. The untimely death of Henry’s brother took away his enthusiasm for the project. He closed the school.
