After the successful completion of the Arnold Sports Festival UK in Birmingham, England, Arnold Schwarzenegger visited the old stadium and received an honorary doctorate at the University of Ulster campus in Belfast, Northern Ireland.
The award, which was presented on March 31, 2026, was given to Austrian Oak in recognition of the brand’s significant contributions to public service, environmental advocacy and the arts.
Arnold continues break the bodybuilding stereotypeand in addition to seven Mr. Olympia awards, he has been active in a number of life-enhancing causes, such as being more active to promote longevity, to study English, join the Hollywood A-list, and even serve as the 38th Governor of California. Belfast also holds special significance for the ‘Commando’ and ‘Predator’ star as it is one of his old stomping grounds.
Arnold Schwarzenegger explained the “Plan for Success”.
“Sixty years ago I came to Belfast as a young athlete.” – he said to excited readers who were present at his speech. “I could never have dreamed that after all these years I would be coming back here and getting an honorary doctorate from the University of Ulster. It’s amazing to be back.”

Schwarzenegger, 76, also gave a pep talk to the students on how to reach their full potential in life. “The most important thing in life is to have a clear vision of what you want to achieve. If you don’t know where you’re going, it’s very difficult to get there. I’ve always had a clear goal – to become a bodybuilder and a movie star. You need a plan,” he said. The last action hero a star “Anything that comes easy is not worth getting. The harder it is, the more valuable it is. See it, go after it, and don’t let anything stop you. See it and go after it.”
Arnold also took time to comment on the power of education, calling it “the foundation” and a great springboard for your future. “The more knowledge you have, the better you are,” he said. “Whether it’s in academia, business, film or sports.”
Professor Paul Bartholomew, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Ulster, praised the new honorary doctorate. He said: “Few people have shaped global culture in sports, film and public life as much as Dr. Arnold Schwarzenegger.”
Radio and TV presenter, Holly Hamilton, who hosted the question-and-answer portionsaid: “He’s exactly what you’d expect…interesting, funny and very smart.” And it seems that Arnold’s message struck a serious chord with many of the students who were lucky enough to see Arnold in Belfast. “Arnold’s story is really about crossing boundaries,” said Emmanuel Eze, who is working towards an MA in film and television at the University of Ulster. “Building resilience and creating opportunity. This resonated deeply with my own journey from Nigeria to Ulster and makes me feel that anything is possible.”
