When I told my family I was going on vacation to the Longevity Clinic in Cancun, they weren’t sure what part of the “clinic” would be the vacation, but when I showed them the photos, it quickly dawned on me. I wasn’t trying to get “younger” back, but just rested enough. It’s been two years since I took a vacation. I had just gotten out of a relationship that ended in slow motion. And I was working and pushing so fast that I stopped questioning if it was sustainable.
When my nervous system was stuck in a heightened state of sympathetic activation, I found it difficult to down-regulate significantly. I slept well, but I knew that recovery and eight hours of sleep were two different things. I needed a vacation that was more than just my toes in the sand, and I needed something that could put me in a state of relaxation and digestion for a long time. That’s how I landed SHA Mexico, a luxury longevity clinic and spa on the coast of the Riviera Maya, for leisure information. My journey based on my biomarkers, me meals were tailored to my preferences and goalsand my treatment schedule was chosen to do what my body craved most, to restore and strengthen. This is a category of wellness tourism that has become a growing economy.
According to the Global Wellness Institute, wellness tourism will reach $1.4 trillion in 2027, and longevity tourism will form a major sector. It is assumed that trips are built around advanced diagnostics, restorative medicineand personalized health protocols will reach $11.08 billion in 2026. The traveler who drives this growth isn’t trying to escape his life, but returning from vacation better equipped for life.
A new definition of luxury
SHA Vice President Alejandro Bataller has seen the longevity space evolve from a niche market to a major cultural shift, and he’s given an insight into what’s driving it.
“We’ve been able to increase our lifespan by 50% in the last century,” Bataller said Muscles and fitness. “But, unfortunately, we spend a third of our lives in poor health. And we have already seen the consequences of this in our parents, in our loved ones.”
This awareness, he says, has fundamentally changed what people want from their leisure time. He pointed to a parallel shift in luxury consumption at large, noting a measurable decline in commodity purchases alongside an increase in experience and health care spending.
He says, “luxury is not someone who wears amazing watches, amazing clothes, but looks healthy and vital.” “It could be someone wearing a T-shirt and sneakers, but they look healthy and shine. That’s what it’s all about these days.”

Inside SHA Mexico: The Future of Fitness Recovery
Entering SHA, as its pronunciation might suggest, feels like a big intake of breath. The carib opens you right in front of the front door with a vestibule right to the ocean. Remarkable… The architecture of SHA is unique in that it resembles the reflection of a strand of DNA when you watch it bend as you look at it from the shore. Every room has an ocean view, which means you wake up over the water every morning to sunrise – a view I couldn’t get enough of.
Behind Five Star Hospitality is the SHA Method, a 360-degree program built around 10 interrelated pillars that encompass physical and mental well-being. Each guest’s seat is built on some combination of these columns. Managing all of this is easier than you might expect because the SHA app, which covers your entire schedule, lets you book or change treatments, view your agenda, and rate sessions as they’re completed.
My journey began with an advanced health screening to determine my health status, including heart rate variability, resting heart rate, blood pressure, cognitive function, body composition, VO2 max, fitness assessment, and glycation markers. Glycation refers to advanced glycation end products, or AGEs, which are now used as biomarkers for biological aging and chronic disease risk. Viewing my biometric image set the pace for the entire program, which is designed to improve.
Nutritional counseling after each meal is built around your individual biology and goals. Foods are anti-inflammatory and mostly plant-based with seafood as an option, calibrated to your caloric needs, with afternoon snacks, tea and protein shakes if your program calls for them.
But the depth of the clinic is what makes SHA rise to the top of the health spa category. I consulted with several doctors, including an osteopath, a psychiatrist, a physical therapist, and a functional medicine physician to analyze the test results, concerns, and suggest a practical home practice plan.
My meeting with Dr. Jair Olivares, director of medical services at SHA, was personally one of the most enlightening hours of the entire trip. He assessed not only physical markers, but also the state of my nervous system, including its current load, its stability and, with a direct measure, how much runway was left before burnout if I continued at the same pace without effective intervention. Having a functional therapist gave what I thought was a clinical context, and the results were very visible.
On the third day at SHA, my nervous system finally changed and according to the Oura Ring, it was a “Balanced Day”. I ended up spending twice as much time in recovery mode as I did in stress mode, which was a big win for me.

Biohacking treatments that improve recovery and reduce stress
The treatment menu is long with over 1000 options. Some are rooted in traditional Chinese medicine, such as acupuncture, or ancient practices such as Ayurvedic or temazcal therapy, while others are rooted in health technology, such as IV ozone therapy and intermittent hypoxia therapy.
The Icaros VR training system deserves a special mention because it looks simple from the outside and is not reliable. The system strengthens core and upper body muscles while enhancing coordination and balance and requires the user to navigate a virtual virtual environment through precise changes in body weight and positional control. Cognitive requirements – reaction time, spatial awareness, sustained concentration – are performed simultaneously with physical load. In fact, it is a neurological and physical exercise presented as a flight simulator.
Between scheduled sessions, I couldn’t wait to spend my free time by the pool, on the beach, or in the hydrotherapy spa. The latter had a full wall of glass windows overlooking the mangroves, making you feel as if you were fully immersed in mother nature. However, you use some methods that are beneficial to humans
body for millennials, including ice skating, swimming pools, infrared and dry saunas and a cold room. Plus, heated seats are just what you need to get out of your head and into your body.

Can a wellness retreat improve your long-term health?
Not only did my Oura ring data show improvements in my biometrics, but I felt more prepared for the coming months. What was interesting to see at first was that most of the guests came alone and the restaurant seating reflected this. While there were two groups and couples, many of us sat at the table for our meal.
But when I looked around, very few people were on their phones. Instead, I saw guests journaling, decorating the room, or taking in the view of the Caribbean Sea outside. Whether alone or with company, everyone was totally present and I think that level of connection is what visitors find at SHA. They go to their own work, and SHA provides the best conditions for that work, then leaves the road.
This attention to detail is intentional, so guests can feel that what begins at SHA continues at home. This long-term thinking is indicative of how Bataller thinks about its broader value proposition.
For Bataller, the longevity conversation should revolve around increasing health, quality years, and living life to its fullest potential. His main argument is that no technology, treatment protocol or supplement stack will trump lifestyle as its primary factor. SHA’s role is to make this lifestyle worth living rather than escaping.
“I don’t think people are here because they want to live 140 years. That’s a very small minority,” he says. “What most people want, in my experience, is to get to 95 or 100, but as a rock star.”
