How we tested…

Four colleagues wore Supergoop!’s Mineral Mattescreen SPF 40 for three to four weeks with and without makeup.

• I feel split with this sunscreen. I love this for so many reasons, but I find it dries me out. The whipped texture is soft and easy to spread and it provides a good level of coverage. On days when I wanted to go makeup-free, this was a great level of coverage while running errands or meeting a friend for lunch.

• This also settles well under makeup – I had no problems, given the slight dryness at the end of the day. I will agree that the AC in my office also dries me out, so I don’t want to blame the mattifying effect of this sunscreen alone.

• My skin is on the drier side, especially on my nose and inside my chin, so I can’t say I’d choose this sunscreen over something that hydrates more and creates a dewy effect. It really depends on your skin type. Like Caroline below, this sunscreen was very gentle on my skin and never broke me out. I really appreciated that.

• For $40, the size of this sunscreen is small. You get 1.5 fluid ounces. I haven’t finished yet, but when the package arrived, I remember being surprised at how small the bottle was.

• Unfortunately, this particular product was not for me. My skin just doesn’t respond well to matte products. I have combination/normal skin, but it errs on the dry side, so most mattifying formulas, including this one, feel too heavy on my skin. The texture itself is a little thicker than usual, but the finish is quite dry, which I didn’t like. Overall, I’m just not the target audience for this formula, but I think it works great on oily skin types.

• On the bright side, my skin is sensitive to many SPFs and this one didn’t make me itch. This is a major bonus. I think this is an expertly formulated product that still feels a lot smoother on my skin than other SPFs, so I’m definitely interested in trying another formula that better suits my skin type and preferences.

• This is as close to one and done as you can get. I’ve been using it every day for three weeks — both on its own and under makeup — and it fits seamlessly into my routine. It spreads easily and does not require much thought. One note: skip the brush. Fingers or a sponge will give you a better and smoother finish.

• The texture is silky and smooth, it feels more like a primer than a traditional sunscreen. It dries down to a real matte finish (which I love) without feeling heavy, greasy or sticky. No pilling, no breakouts, and no afternoon oil spills.

• The range of color and shade is where it lost me. I tried sunrise and golden hour and there was no shade for me. The Sun was too light and a bit cakey, while the Golden Hour was too deep for me to wear on its own. It also hasn’t oxidized or set during the day, so what you see is what you get. If your shade matches, great. If not, it’s not.

• It kept well during the day – not greasy, not cracked. My skin felt protected (which I expect from Supergoop!) and best of all, I had zero irritation or breakouts – a big win for my sensitive, eczema-prone skin.

• For me, the biggest drawback is the price. At this price point, daily use, and especially repeated use in the summer, is quickly achieved. I’m not done with my test period, but it’s easy to see how fast you can go. That said, if they have your shade, I think it’s worth it – especially if you want a matte, skin-friendly SPF that can double as your foundation.

• I’ve been testing Supergoop’s Mineral Mattescreen in Sunset for a couple of weeks and for the most part it does what it says. It goes on easily, feels soft and definitely gives that mattifying and blurring effect.

• One note: It made my skin look a little gray. There was no white cast (a big plus for deeper skin tones), but I can’t reach for this as a standalone. It works as a primer and easily layers under makeup. I am amazed at how good my skin looks (and not oily). Long story short, not my only daily sunscreen, but I keep it in rotation as a primer. And yes, I would buy it again.
