With great vulnerability comes great power. Tom Holland is redefining the film industry and masculinity. Best known for his lead role in the world-famous Spider-Man franchise, Tom Holland sat down with Amy Poehler on the podcast and talked about his journey with sobriety. To be honest, Holland thinks about the reasons for putting up the bottle.

“So I quit drinking because I had a problem and I couldn’t stop. It affected my professional life, my personal life and my health. So I decided to pack it in and I went through that first year, which I think was the hardest I’ve ever been through.”

Tom Holland is wired differently

In an interview with IGH, Holland explained how being diagnosed with ADHD and dyslexia often puts him in trouble in his professional life. He noticed that when someone gives him a blank canvas for a character, it can be a little intimidating.

Fame creates pressures that most of us will never fully understand, and while it may not have been the only force behind Holland’s complicated relationship with alcoholADHD and dyslexia dramatically increase a person’s susceptibility to addiction—a vulnerability that fame, success, and a camera-ready smile can easily mask.

Studies have shown that individuals with ADHD are more likely to abuse substances, with the substance acting as a tonic for racing thoughts and hyperactivity. People with ADHD usually have extra mental health disorderssuch as anxiety, depression and dyslexia.

When the body starts to keep score

Tom Holland spoke with unflinching honesty The Jay Shetty Podcast about how alcohol affected his health and overall quality of life. Like many Brits, he had a particularly lavish Christmas, and as a challenge to himself, Holland decided to Dry January. Before he knew it, he was thinking about drinking.

“I woke up thinking about it; I was checking the clock and it was 12. And it really scared me. I was like, wow, maybe I’ve had a little too much alcohol.”

With this realization, he decided to “punish” himself by extending his dry January to February as well. According to Holland, he believed that if he stayed sober for two months, then he could prove to himself that he had no problem.

However, after two months, Holland admitted that he was still really struggling.

“I felt like I couldn’t be social, like I couldn’t go to the pub and have a lemonade. I couldn’t go out to dinner and I was really, really struggling.” Holland says “I was really worried that I might have an alcohol problem.”

Alcohol makes you old

After his acute realization that this could be a serious personal matter, Holland committed to six months of sobriety.“And by the time I got to the first of June, I was the happiest person in my life. I could sleep better; I could solve problems better. The things that were going wrong on film that would normally bother me, I could take my steps. I had a lot of mental clarity. I felt healthier … superior.”

The social relationship with alcohol needs to be reconsidered. It is a highly prescribed and addictive substance that seriously threatens the body’s most vital systems. Heavy alcohol consumption is a major risk factor for acute and chronic diseases. Precipitating conditions that impair quality of life over time. Most importantly, excessive alcohol consumption can negatively affect a person’s cognitive abilities over time, creating a growing crisis in the aging population. Long-term drinking habits have been proven to cause cognitive impairment in older adults. It deprives people of mental clarity and independence. In short, no short-term relief is worth the long-term costs of alcohol to the human body.

Tom Holland: What made it a little easier to let go

Everyone’s relationship with substances is different.

Various cognitive and sociocultural factors come into play when your body determines how well you can handle your alcohol. We must be aware and be responsible for ourselves. We can let substances make decisions for us, especially when it comes to the health of the body.

Committing to lifelong sobriety is not an easy decision for most people. Tom Holland shared the valuable advice he received from Robert Downey Jr. in an interview with Men’s Health UK.

“Downey has a saying, ‘Embrace a cactus,’ which basically embraces the ugly parts of your character, and if you embrace the cactus enough, those ugly parts will become the best parts of your new self. And I think that’s a really great phrase for anyone who’s trying to get sober or identify and not let go of parts of your past as your great past.”

Tom Holland’s journey is a quiet revolution. In an industry built on keeping up appearances, he chose raw honesty. Holland has not only changed his life; he has allowed an entire generation of young people to do the same.
