Another study just came out that shows what we’ve been publishing for years: coconut oil is the best option for oral health and oral disease treatment.
This is dangerous information for those who make a living from the manufacture and sale of oral care products and medicines for the treatment of oral diseases, as coconut oil cannot be patented as a natural product.
The latest research comes from Spain and is published in the journal BMC Oral Health about periodontitis:
Clinical efficacy and patient-reported outcomes of coconut oil as an adjunctive treatment for periodontitis: a randomized, triple-blind pilot trial
Abstract
Background: Periodontitis is a common chronic disease that is usually managed with non-surgical treatment and additional antimicrobial rinses, although their side effects may interfere with long-term use. Coconut oil has emerged as a potential natural alternative due to its antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects. The aim of this study was to evaluate the clinical and patient-reported outcomes of periodontal patients treated with non-surgical treatment with or without coconut oil as an adjunctive modality.
Methods: 30 participants with stage II-III periodontitis were randomly assigned to three groups: coconut oil, chlorhexidine 0.12% and placebo (coconut flavored water) for one month, after surgical periodontal treatment. A blinded examiner assessed plaque index, bleeding on probing, pocket pocket depth, clinical attachment level, oral pH, tooth color, sulfur compounds in breath, and patient-reported outcomes, including the Oral Health Impact Profile-14 before starting mouthwash use (T1 and one month after mouthwash). non-surgical periodontal treatment (T3).
Results: Compared to placebo, both coconut oil and chlorhexidine reduced plaque index at T2 (p = 0.001; p = 0.006), bleeding during testing at T2 (p = 0.001; p = 0.001) and T3 (p = 0.006; p = 0.2). 0.001; p = 0.001), clinical attachment level at T2 (p = 0.001; p = 0.015) and sulfur compounds at T2 (p = 0.045; p = 0.003). Compared to chlorhexidine, coconut oil was more effective in reducing clinical attachment loss at T2 (p = 0.006). At T2, chlorhexidine was associated with an increase in burning sensation (p = 0.03) and discoloration (p < 0.001), while coconut oil decreased the degree of dry mouth perception (p < 0.001). Coconut oil and chlorhexidine improved breath perception (p = 0.003; p = 0.030). Patients preferred placebo over coconut oil or chlorhexidine (p = 0.006; p = 0.015). Quality of life improved significantly in the coconut oil group at T2 (p = 0.024).
Summary: Compared with placebo, coconut oil and chlorhexidine improved periodontal parameters. However, coconut oil reduces dry mouth and improves quality of life without the side effects of chlorhexidine.
