We are excited to share a new opportunity for ASN members to support the advancement of nutrition science and help authors publish good research across the broad and interdisciplinary field of nutrition. Current Development in Nutrition (CDN) is piloting a science editor model and we are seeking qualified food scientists interested in serving in this role.
What is a scientific editor?
A scientific editor is an experienced nutrition expert who oversees peer review for a specific group of manuscripts. For CDN, Scientific Editors process manuscripts that are transferred from one ASN journal to another journal. Current developments in nutrition. Scientific editors:
- Make sure the submitted scripts are compatible with the CDN objectives and scope
- Manage the peer review process for assigned papers
- Support authors through reviews and revisions
- Help authors strengthen their work and increase their chances of successful publication
- Contribute to CDN’s mission of publishing quality research that reflects the breadth and interdisciplinary nature of nutrition research.
Academic editors will work alongside the CDN editor-in-chief, deputy editors and academic editors. They will only focus on submitted manuscripts and will not be involved in the editorial process for original submissions to CDN.
Why is this important?
This model allows CDN to allow more authors to improve and improve their research, even if their manuscripts are not accepted in another ASN journal. It is designed to encourage authors to stay within the ASN family of journals, rather than seeking peer review elsewhere, and to help ensure that well-conducted nutrition research continues to find a home within ASN publications.

Training and supervision
Scientific editors complete a structured curriculum developed with Elsevier in collaboration with ASN and CDN leadership. Their work is closely supported to ensure that all decisions are aligned with the goals and scope of the CDN and meet ASN publishing standards.
ASN and CDN leadership continue the journal’s strong commitment to scientific integrity and editorial independence. All decisions will remain based on scientific reviews.

Science editors are compensated for their services and the expected workload is approximately 3-4 hours per week.
