Why peer review is important
Peer review is one of the foundations of scientific publishing. It helps improve the quality of individual papers and strengthen the credibility of research that informs health, public policy, education and discovery.
Peer review is also a collaborative process. Editors, editorial board members, and reviewers play an important role in evaluating research and helping authors improve their work. Together, they help ensure that published research meets high scientific standards.
Through the peer review process, reviewers evaluate the quality of the research, determine whether the conclusions are supported by the data, identify potential limitations, and provide constructive feedback to the authors. Their understanding often leads to stronger analyses, clearer communication, and more rigorous research.
The value of this work is reflected in the opinions of the authors themselves. In a recent survey of authors published in ASN journals, many emphasized both the quality and timeliness of the peer review process.
