Kenyan runner Sebastian Sauve made the most of his run at the London Marathon over the weekend, becoming the first person to officially run the 26.2 mile (42.195 km) course in under 2 hours.
While fellow Kenyan Eliud Kipchoge clocked 1:59:40 at the 2019 INEOS 1:59 Challenge in Vienna, His high performance could not be confirmed as a world record because of the rules around pacing and fluid was not observed. During his efforts, Kipchoge received alcohol from an unofficial source, making him ineligible for official bragging rights. When Sebastian Sauve ran the London Marathon, he was not only on pace to break Kipchoge’s record at the halfway mark, but also accelerated in the second half, taking 10 seconds off Kipchoge’s unofficial finish time.

There was something in the water at those official London Marathon refreshment stations as Yomif Kejelcha, the Ethiopian London Marathon runner, finished second in a further two hours of 1:59:41. Sawe was just one second shy of the world championship.

It’s a day to remember for me,” Sauve said after making more history in London on April 26, 2026. “We started the race well. When I got close to the finish I felt strong. I finally finished, I saw the time and I was very excited.”
