Earlier this week, I reported that US District Judge Emmett Sullivan ordered the Trump Department of Justice (DOJ) to return unredacted versions of some of the heavily redacted Epstein files today, Thursday, July 2, 2026.

As expected, the DOJ, which is headed by Trump’s former personal attorney, Todd Blanche, did not enforce the order today.

As the deadline set by a federal judge expires, the Trump administration announced today that it will file an appeal rather than release a trove of documents related to Epstein that the court ruled were improperly redacted.

The decision sets up a direct showdown between US District Judge Emmett Sullivan, who has accused the department of allegedly violating the law, and Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, who has declined to defend the department’s redaction decisions in court.

“The government ignored a law passed by Congress and then refused to defend its actions in court, all to protect the rich and powerful.,”

Brendan Ballou of the Public Integrity Project, which represents journalist Cathy Fang, said after Sullivan’s sentencing last week.

Sullivan, who was appointed to the bench by Ronald Reagan and served on the federal bench for nearly four decadesfound that Blanche had effectively conceded the merits of Fang’s claim by failing to file a serious response to the court.

“In a dramatic response, the Attorney General acknowledged Ms. Fang’s meritorious arguments.,”

it was stated in the 44-page decision.

What Sullivan didn’t do was give the department a way out.

When the DOJ asked him to stay the order to review the appeal, he refused. The deadline ended on July 2.

The department’s appeal, if it clears the D.C. Circuit, could trigger a deadline that would delay any disclosure indefinitely.

If he doesn’t, and the department still refuses to comply, Sullivan has a tool: a show-cause order requiring Blanche to appear before him and demur.

It would be one of the most unusual legal proceedings in recent memory — an acting attorney general called to defend a decision to challenge a transparency mandate that his own president signed into law.

The same pressure is building within Congress.

Former Attorney General Pam Bondi appeared before the House Oversight Committee on Wednesday, where members pressed her on which names were withheld and why.

Bondi did not answer these questions directly.

The House Oversight Committee released the documents from Epstein’s estate separately, adding to a collection of material at once massive — 3.5 million pages, 2,000 videos, 180,000 images — and remarkably incomplete at the edges.

Congressman Roe Hanna, who co-sponsored the Epstein Transparency Act, along with Congressman Thomas Massey, were interviewed yesterday about the Trump administration’s failure to legislate and produce these documents.

He argued that the Senate should require Todd Blanche, who is currently the acting head of the DOJ, to comply with the law signed by Trump before the Senate confirms him to lead the Justice Department.

Blanche, who was nominated to be attorney general by President Donald Trump on June 8, has until July 2 in federal court to publicly release a package of secret files on Trump’s old friend, the now-deceased sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.

Blanche should know that Trump, who has previously represented her in criminal and civil cases, does not want any more Epstein files released and has called for the massive and extensive litigation to go away.

And Blanche must also know what to do with Congress, which passed the Epstein Files Transparency Act in November by a single Republican vote, as her Senate Judiciary Committee confirmation hearing is just two weeks away.

The days of the Epstein cartel are now limited as they cannot keep all these redacted files secret for much longer.
